  • Aircraft turbine engines are the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions within the U.S. transportation sector, which is not yet subject to greenhouse gas regulations

  • However, U.S. aviation is part of the increasingly interconnected global aviation sector for which the EU’s SRIA 2050 has already set a target to achieve a 75% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050

  • Now, environmental/ thermal barrier coatings (E/TBCs) applied to ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are beginning to demonstrate their suitability to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in turbine engines

  • Existing research-grade prototype E/TBC CMC systems suffer from instabilities caused by inadequate material design at the micron to centimeter scale
